This July, a team of Mission Youth Detroit missionaries will head to Carmen, Santa Cruz Naranjo, Guatemala for an 8-day mission adventure. The local village of Carmen is near a coffee and sugar cane plantation, where most of the families work in some capacity. There are about 280 families in the village, some of whom live in extreme poverty.
The current mission project involves building a parish church and helping with evangelization in the area. The current church is in poor condition, and the local community is in the process of fundraising to repair and rebuild the facility. The amount of construction work we do will depend on the progress made come July. Spiritual evangelization work includes opportunities to interact with the townspeople, local schools and orphanages by hosting kid’s camps, giving spiritual talks, leading sports activities and organizing liturgical celebrations. The last day of the mission is a visit to the museums in the tourist area of Guatemala City.
MISSION TRAINING
Each mission includes a mandatory training course. Topics include a crash course on Guatemala history and customs, as well as spiritual and human resources for missionary work. Before leaving for Guatemala, each missionary must attend the Missionary Training session.
